Five Things You Need to Know This Week

Patch gives you a rundown of what's going on around the community.

 

1. Presidents Day

Presidents Day, a federal holiday, is today, Feb. 18. Schools are closed, along with the library and the post office.

2. Grandparents Raising Grandkids

Youth Connect is hosting a wellness workshop from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at the Sewickley Valley YMCA. The Second Time Around: Grandparents Raising Grandkids discusses the rewards and challenges families face when grandparents raise their grandchildren. 3. Book Authors

Jim O'Brien, sports author of Immaculate Reflections: On Pittsburgh and Sports, will be speaking on his new book and sports connections to Sewickley at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21 at the Sewickley Public Library. O'Brien will also sign copies of his book.

Becky Aikman, author of Saturday Night Widows, will be in town at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22 at the Penguin Bookshop for a short reading and book signing.

4. Carnival for a Cure

Carnival for a Cure kicks off at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22 with games, fun and prizes at the Edgeworth Elementary School. The cost is $5 per family and includes 20 tickets.  Proceeds benefit the Quaker Valley Relay for Life.  For more information, contact Barbara Cooley Thaw at bcthaw@aol.com

5. Ohio River Boulevard Corridor Meeting

A public information gathering workshop is planned from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23 to brainstorm ideas that will improve the general aesthetics and enhance the Ohio River Boulevard corridor. The workshop takes place in Hansen Library at Sewickley Academy.
