Sundown tonight, Dec. 20, begins the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah - which is an eight-day celebration, also known as the Festival of Lights.
The holiday commemorates the rededication of the the temple in Jerusalem after a hard-won battle many centuries ago. To celebrate the miracle of not only winning the battle, but also the way a small amount of oil meant for one day's use burned for eight days, the Jewish people light the Menorah each night in remembrance.
Other customs involve playing specific games and eating specific foods, including Hanukkah Latkes.

We are observing this first night by lighting candles together and enjoying latkes and doughnuts with family, around our fireplace on this chilly and damp night. We wish our friends a happy family evening together as well.
