Quaker Valley to Host Free Parent-Student Workshops

The first workshop, "Promoting Excellence at Home," will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Osborne Elementary School.

As a parent, Terry Bradford knows what it’s like juggling responsibilities at work and home.

She’s hoping a new three-part series of workshops will help parents and students find ways to continuously improve success in both academics and personal development, despite life's other distractions.

“It’s just so everybody gets a fair chance to be successful,” said Bradford, a community liaison.

Quaker Valley School District will host the first in a series of free workshops on Wednesday, Nov. 28 at Osborne Elementary School. The parent workshop runs from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and will include dinner and childcare.

Dr. Don Sheffield, author and educator, and Bradford, community liaison, will co-facilitate the “Promoting Excellence at Home” workshops. Attendees will also receive a copy of Sheffield's book, “Practice Makes Perfect—Not!: Excellence is a Habit.”

A major emphasis of Sheffield's work is helping parents manage the academic development of their children. Sheffield has developed programs that incorporate excellence training at home and delivered numerous workshops for improving parenting skills.

According to the district, the workshops are designed to assist parents in understanding success behaviors; to provide strategies for improving academic work; to support parents in developing habits of excellence at home; and to help parents maximize parent-child interaction to ensure proper academic and personal development and growth.

Bradford said there will be raffles and giveaways, such as gift cards, for those who attend.

Attendees are asked to RSVP to Stephanie McKissic at 412-749-3616 or mckissics@qvsd.org with the number of adults and children planning to attend. For more information regarding the workshop, contact Terry Bradford at 412-414-1335 or via email at Tbradford321@yahoo.com
