Patch Poll: Should New PA Attorney General Kane Investigate Corbett's Handling of Penn State Scandal?

Kathleen Kane has vowed to determine if politics played a role in the development of the case against Jerry Sandusky and other Penn State officials.

Many political observers suggest that Kathleen Kane's election as Pennsylvania's first female Attorney General was due in no small part to her promise to investigate whether politics played a role in the evolution of the case against convicted child molester Jerry Sandusky and other Penn State officials.

“As soon as she began early in her campaign talking about the promise to investigate it objectively, it spread pretty quickly on a grass-roots level. There’s no doubt that she had a lot of Penn State support,” Maribeth Schmidt of the grass-roots alumni group Penn Staters for Responsible Stewardship told the Harrisburg Patriot-News.

Kane also dedicated an entire section of her campaign web site to the Sandusky case.

Governor Tom Corbett, a Republican who oversaw the Sandusky investigation when he was Pennsylvania's attorney general, has said repeatedly that politics were not involved in the investigation and did not affect its pace. He suggests Democrats and the media that keep reporting it were stirring the controversy of his handling of the case.

So we want to know what you think? Should Kane launch an investigation into Corbett's building of the case against Jerry Sandusky, or should the attorney general office's resources be used elsewhere?

Let us know what you think by taking or Patch poll, or leaving your comments in the box below.

Well Rog, if I can call you Rog, I can't speak to that. I'm not sure what Patch is just yet. I do know Corbett is a criminal. I've know that for years. I know how he tried to swing the balance of power in Harrisburg by spending his entire time and using state AAG's, an insane amount of them, to get evidence that the Speaker of the House was stealing office supplies. Wasn't something I really cared about then. I did not know he did this at the expense of Sandusky case. Heard this from one of his friends. A benefactor 1,000 miles away. Now I know a lot more about what a monster he is. And by the way, I'm a hard-core Republican. Corbett's a Republican. I guess what I meant by hard core is I believe when children are raped there need to be a real investigation and people need to go to jail. If you even spend a little time connecting the dots you can see Corbett is guilty of obstruction, but more importantly he let a predator run lose and contributed millions of dollars to his organization till it wasn't gonna work out for him any more. He needs to go to jail. And then burn in hell. Along with a lot of other people. Again, don't know this site. They had a two answer poll, I answered it, you got a problem with that? Well, keep on trolling, can't tell when I'll be back or give a sh#t about your opinion!

When we know the answer to that question we will begin to unravel the truth of this whole sorry episode.

Yes and lets start the investigation with Sandusky's wife, he was molesting them in the house and she turned a blind eye.

Paterno didn't do all he should of done either, he should of called State Police, Campus Police and CYS, but he chose not to. He is as guilty as Sandusky

Politics plays into everything, but the depth of an offense will only be found in the searching for it. If Kane has political aspirations this puts her into a 'precarious' position. Major decisions as this is risky, no question. Choosing to follow through on her commitment is a very brave thing to do especially when the citizen may not have her back when all is said and done. -- Everything suggests that she should do a superficial whitewash and be done with it. Most home-folks will give her kudos and let it die - maybe. However, if she takes a serious dive into the 'black hole' then she cannot blink until it's over with. She will live to be a hero or she will die to short-term provocation. If she leaves her integrity and her moral consciousness at the door of the office when she goes to work - she will choose the first alternative approach to dealing with the situation. -- If she lives by her principles she will play by the rules of the game, and her gut instincts. You roll the dice and accept the consequences with one exception, you know your opponent's move when you do it. To disarm your rival you disarm his/her wit. I would dare to say that there is very few people who would actually follow through on a serious effort as this with so much at stake here. But since 'justice' is at stake, as well, I would be impressed if she did.

There is a lot more to what the media has presented concerning whether Penn State actually covered up for Jerry Sandusky. Much has been investigated over this past year to collect substantial proof that Joe Paterno was not involved in a cover up. The role that Tom Corbett played is NOT clear, very fishy, and needs a thorough investigation. For more insight into how flimsy pinning the blame on Penn State is, check out this excerpt from a documentary being produced on the matter: http://youtu.be/D3z-3CBfM8Q

This entire situation reeks of an unfair rush to judgment with regard to PSU and Paterno. Corbett allowed Sandusky to wander the streets knowing he was a pedo, yet no one says boo about it. Yet, Paterno does everything he is supposed to do with the vague information given Him by Mile McQueary all the way back in 2001, not knowing that Sandusky was a pedophile, and still gets crucified. Yes, Kane needs to look into Corbett's failure to do more to get Sandusky off the streets once he knew what Sandusky was doing.

It was not vague information, Paterno knew he was a pedophile, he did NOT do everything he was supposed to do, and the evidence shows he was actively involved in helping the administrators in the coverup. Anyone who knows the power Paterno wielded knows that it was him making the decisions and ordering the administrators to back off, the emails show that. Paterno was the one who allowed Sandusky to wander the streets, and the campus. If he was still alive he'd be in handcuffs by now, and rightly so.

@Mark A, Paterno not only did everything he was obligated to do, he did MORE than he was obligated to do. You say, "the evidence shows he was actively involved in helping the administrators in the coverup". Please direct me to that evidence. I've read all the transcripts of testimony and reviewed all of the physical evidence submitted which has been released to date. Either you have access to information which the public hasn't seen OR you are a liar. Which is it? Point me to the evidence, please. The emails certainly don't show what you say they show. They've been published across the web and nobody has said what you say, even when only parts of those emails had been revealed. Just give me a link to the "evidence", not some half-wit's opinion.

Paterno allowed Sandusky to wonder the streets as he didn't want it known he has a pedophile as a coach on his team. That brought young boys into the shower room.

I imagine you are a JoePa fan. So you might want to take him at "his" word and he said that he should have done more. He thought he was protecting his baby, the school, when what he did was push a known problem down the street. If in fact you had a close relationship with someone affected AFTER Jerry was shown the door, you might look at things a bit differently

Tom Corbett needs to be investigated for his role in the suppression of an indictment regarding the Sandusky case and, also, why he failed to indict Alan Shipman in the toxic Fracking fluids and waste case even though he had a great deal of information to do so. Was the reason based on his relationships with the Marcellus Shale industry and their financial contributions as he prepared for a run for governor?

This should ALL be investigated.

I think that Corbett had some conflicts of interest here.....as AG he refuses to prosecute the first reported cases; he takes donations for his gubernatorial campaign from the Second Mile; he okays a large state grant to the Second Mile; he sits on the Penn State Board of Trustees and urges the BoT to fire Paterno for not doing more with the first REPORTED case. And do I think Corbett needs to be investigated? That would be a duh, YES!

You betcha!!! Theres plenty more to the case then what has already been presented.... So far the case has progressed as expected,, and next step is the trial and conviction of the GUILTY administrators!!!! Early in the case when charges were brought against Sandusky,,, there was much, much speculation,,,, that this was only the tip of the iceberg!!!! There has been so,so much corruption, and cover up along the way, that it is almost amazing the monster was allowed his freedom for so long!!!! EVERYONE,,, that had anything to do with the cover up, and prolonging of Sanduskys actions,,, should be fully , independently investigated,, givin their day in court ,,, and if convicted punished accordingly!!!! Remember the country we live in and the justice system we have in place... The magnetude of the crimes involved warrant this and the public and victims should demand the same.... The rest of the story remains to be written until the investigation is complete and charges are filed appropriately!!! Stay tuned!!!!

I believe Paterno relayed the info told to him to his superiors, even though it was hearsay in a court of law, as he didn't witness any activities. Paterno was too busy coaching the team he placed the burden of proof into his higher UPS, and trusted they would investigate the allegations. Tom Corbett should be accountable for his actions too. If I was the Paternity family I would cease any further donations to Penn State and instead donate to child abuse victims. We love Joe, and always will.

The Sandusky case has already been tried and convicted...I would like to see the investigation of the Benghazi case sooner than later... hopefully not forgotten about completely... aka - swept under. Preferably untainted findings of the full investigation.
That would be more meaningful than an after the fact credibility in the Sandusky case. One deals with the states... the other deals with national security.

Benghazi has nothing to do with Sandusky. Whether one case is investigated has zero impact or effect on the other's investigation. Kane's office has no jurisdiction over Benghazi. Her position involves the interests of PA. I think the Sandusky case qualifies.

If Paterno knew Sandusky was a pedo in 2001, then so did professionals working for Centre County Youth Services, Center County Department of welfare, Center County District Attorney's office, University Police, and the Attorney General's office. Each of the foregoing agencies investigated ... And exonerated Sandusky in1998. Get a clue Mark A before you start shooting your mouth off. Your ignorance of the facts is showing.

I am pleased to hear she won! Someone needs to tell the absolute truth in this horrible circumstance. Penn State just kept there eyes closed hoping this would go away; and for many years it did. Unfortunately jerry didn't and kept up his unforgivable acts. This nation was built so that NO ONE, or NO GROUP has absolute power over the masses. I think this Nation just learned that lesson again!

Here are some questions that I feel need to be answered:
- Just how was Jerry Sandusky — an approved adoptive and foster parent — allowed unfettered, unauthorized, individual access to minors through his charity, The Second Mile, a non-profit licensed and audited by the state with oversight by the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General?
-How did Centre County Children & Youth Services (CYS) and the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare (DPW) – both with decades’ long relationships with Jerry Sandusky — repeatedly fail to identify him as a sexual predator? Who is currently investigating and evaluating their roles from 1998 to present?
-What action, if any, was taken by the executive leadership of The Second Mile after the organization was notified by Penn State officials of Jerry Sandusky’s behavior related to the 1998 and 2001 cases? How has The Second Mile escaped intense judicial scrutiny for allowing a suspected pedophile to remain in contact with children?
-Why did Tom Corbett, in the role of Attorney General, delay the arrest of Jerry Sandusky for nearly three years?
-Why was Tom Corbett permitted to accept $625,000 in gubernatorial campaign contributions from a charity whose founder he was investigating? As governor, how did Corbett approve a $3 million dollar grant for The Second Mile while he was overseeing a grand jury investigation of its founder?

Like me, this anonymous person has an opinion on most everything. It would be a benefit to Patch if he would write essays relating his positions rather than simply reacting to and critiquing the work of others. I place myself in the center of the often-ugly, often-irrational and contempt-filled Patch "battlefield" with a blog that has my full, real name attached to it. I have the utmost respect for those who are willing to join me, to subject themselves to the same review and barrage of criticism (sometimes veering into hatred) which I endure. I suspect Patch would be but a shadow of itself if all contributors and commenters were required to stand front and center unmasked rather than to shoot from behind the bushes.

I believe that Tom Corbett was an Attorney General of integrity and honor. Were it not for his efforts, some of the crooks of the General Assembly would still be at it. Having said that, I have no objection to an investigation of his handling of the Jerry Sandusky atrocity. If Mr. Corbett acted in the manner which I believe he did, he has nothing to fear from Attorney General Elect-Kane or anyone.

For those who see Joe Paterno as a saint, I would note his self-condemnation, his own words regarding the Sandusky horror and his role in it, "With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more....It (my failure to have done more) is one of the greatest sorrows of my life." This does not sound like someone who wonders whether Sandusky is guilty, does it? There is no question in my mind that Paterno would have been criminally charged along with other University officials had he lived.

Joe Paterno was a legendary, great coach who by many accounts, instilled laudable principles in his players. He was, however, anointed as the de facto leader of the University, college football taking precedence over all else. On his watch, a monster was able to destroy the lives of innocent boys in plain sight. There shall always be a stain on the Paterno legacy for it.

As Attorney General, Tom Corbett received over $647,000 in campaign contributions from members of the Second Mile Foundation, while only assigning one investigator to the case.

Meanwhile, at the same time, he assigned 14 investigators to Bill Deweese, who spent more than 5 years trying to get him.

It is difficult to believe these campaign contributions did not improperly influence his decision to not file charges against Jerry Sandusky.

The state police trooper who initially handled the Clinton County case against Jerry Sandusky believed there was enough evidence from a teenage boy -- now known as Victim One-- to charge Sandusky with indecent assault.

To John G: Iam not a PSU alum but my children have both attended there. I have seen first hand what the media coverage has done to them. It is not as heinous as what Sandusky did, but it was still victimization. Did you see the video that I mentioned? If not, you are as guilty as all the others who have convicted Joe (not those who have already been indicted, =The people of Second Mile and others) who are only looking at one side -- the one the media has produced. .

This video gives a different perspective. BUT, if you have already closed your mind then please be quiet or answer the questions. Why don't you wait until all the facts are in before you condem.

After all, isn't this what the discussion is all about? People are looking to Ms. Kane to discover all of those facts hoping that she can do it impartially. Sometimes I believe that people make up their minds simply based on their emotional opinions. Those who hate will always hate. Those who are jealous will also stay the same. Why? Stress and hatred can ruin you life and your emotional well being and relationships with others. It eats at your soul. I hope you find peace and will not reply to you again.
