Anna and Emily Novak of Sewickley were excited to attend their fourth Light Up Night, the borough’s annual holiday event that has become a family tradition for the Novak's.

The mom and daughter pair arrived a half-hour early as did others, in anticipation of the evening ahead. Street vendors were set up along Broad Street while stores remained open for shopping and live entertainment continued through the evening.

From the free hot chocolate at Sewickley Eye Group to the cotton candy, face painting and ice sculptures, Anna Novak said the entertainment was suitable for both adults and kids.

“There’s so much here you can do,” she said. “I really like the ice carving.”

Her daughter, Emily, 10, said she especially liked the Santa booth over at the Sewickley United Methodist Church, where you could make a call to Jolly Old Saint Nick. But the two were mostly looking forward to a performance by No Bad JuJu.

“They were awesome last year,” Anna Novak said.

Shortly before the fireworks show, Mayor Brian Jeffe, Council President Bob Hague and Chamber of Commerce President Jim Price addressed the crowd, heralding the hometown celebration. Miss Three Rivers 2011 Drea Chamberlain joined the group on stage and sang “Do You Hear What I Hear?”

The event was well attended and no mishaps were reported. Earlier in the evening, police were dealing with a four-car crash that occurred around 5 p.m. on the Sewickley Bridge and shut down traffic in both directions for a bit. Police said a motorist traveling across the bridge toward Sewickley passed out, drifted into oncoming traffic, and struck another car head-on. The unidentified man was taken to Heritage Valley Sewickley Hospital. His condition was unavailable.

Despite the brief bridge closure, the crowd continued to flow in. Shortly after 6:30 p.m., street lights were turned off, decorations were lit and fireworks brightened the sky.
