Sewickley police say the shutdown of the Ambridge-Aliquippa Bridge didn’t produce many headaches during Monday’s rush-hour commutes.

“It’s a little congested, but it’s been going fairly well,” Sewickley Police Chief James Ersher said Monday.

An overnight snowfall and subsequent road conditions most likely slowed morning traffic. Ersher said no traffic tickets were issued and no accidents were reported.

The Sewickley Bridge is being used as the main detour during eight months of repairs to the nearby Ambridge-Aliquippa Bridge, which officially closed on Saturday.

Ersher said much of the congestion he saw on Monday appeared to be coming across the Sewickley Bridge from Moon Township.

“Traffic on 65 seemed to be moving very well,” Ersher said.

Quaker Valley school district officials did not report any bus transportation issues, though one district employee did endure a two-hour commute from Hopewell Township.

Jim Struzzi, PennDOT spokesman, said some delays were to be expected, particularly on Route 51.

“We will be tweaking traffic signals as we monitor how traffic reacts over next few days,” Struzzi said.

Police plan to provide traffic details at key locations for the next two weeks.
