The Quaker Valley High School Concert Choir kicked off Allegheny County's annual Holiday Choral Program with a performance Wednesday morning in downtown Pittsburgh.

The concert took place on the grand staircase of the Allegheny County Courthouse on Grant Street.

An initiative started by Quaker Valley, the holiday concert series is celebrating its 45th year. This year, in addition to singing, the 110-member choir participated in The Holiday Project, a program began in the 1960s that gathers gifts and distributes them to children whose families are receiving human services support in Allegheny County.

Quaker Valley had a goal to deliver at least 45 stockings – one for each of the 45 years Quaker Valley has been involved in the concert series.

Matt Boice, choir director, said the choir actually brought 70 stockings, which were filled with gifts for teenage and pre-teen children.

Performances will be held each weekday through Friday, Dec. 19. A total of 25 local choirs, orchestras and bands are participating in this year’s program.

Each performance is broadcast on the Grant Street side of the courthouse so downtown shoppers and workers may enjoy the concert, according to county officials.
