Say It Ain't So - Snow Before Halloween? You Betcha
Patch will be updating reports throughout the day.
Residents awoke Saturday morning to see that which they found hard to believe -- a light cover of snow with the white stuff still coming down even though Halloween is a couple of days away.
Scanner reports were mostly for minor traffic accidents and trees on power lines around the area.
By 9:10 a.m., the National Weather Service issued a "special weather statement" warning that the snow this morning may bring slippery roads. The service urged caution, especially on bridges and elevated surfaces, which freeze first.
"Snow falling across the district this morning combined with temperatures near the freezing mark may produce some slick spots on roads," the weather service statement said.
The National Weather Service stated that a brief burst of heavy snow extends from Beaver Falls to Washington to Morgantown and will slowly shift northeast this morning.
"This burst of snow will bring a quick half inch to an inch of snow and may cause roads to become slick," according to the weather service statement.
9:47 a.m. Update from National Weather Service
"A low pressure system moving up the mid-Atlantic will allow for snow this morning. Snow will end by the early afternoon. With warmer ground temperatures, light accumulation will be limited to elevated and grassy surfaces," the National Weather Service said.
4:26 a.m. Statement from National Weather Service
The National Weather Service weather outlook for Allegheny and Butler counties at 4:26 a.m. stated:
"Light snow will be possible this morning. The light snow will end by afternoon. With warmer ground temperatures, any light accumulation will be limited to elevated and grassy surfaces."
A low-pressure system that is moving from the Gulf states to the mid-Atlantic is what is leading to this first snowfall of the season, the weather service said.
Motorists are warned that the snow and near-freezing temperatures could mean slippery roads, especially on bridges.
Scanner reports this morning are noting problems with trees on power lines.
