Sewickley Academy on Saturday will host its annual International Dinner, which promotes awareness of countries and cultures around the world.

The dinner begins at 4:30 p.m. in the middle and senior school cafeteria and will be followed by various culture clubs’ performances in the Rea Auditorium at 5:45 p.m.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is hosted by the Diverse Student Association and Sewickley Academy’s culture clubs.

Juniors Michael Sutton, association president, and Nathan Morneault, international dinner chairman, have been organizing the event with other students.

Jeremiah Jackson, Sewickley Academy’s director of diversity, said about 75 people are expected to attend the dinner, The theme this year, which was chosen by students, is “Global Jubilee.”

“The theme represents all of the culture clubs coming together,” said Ian Carroll, a senior and German club president.

“We can all show each other our talents in line with the traditions of our representative cultures," Carroll said. "Most of our culture clubs come from Europe, which tend to be very similar to America currently, but we are going to take you back to different times in their histories and show things that aren't always well-known.”

Seven student culture clubs will present at the event. The Asian Cultures Club will present a skit about the story of the Chinese Zodiac.

Club President Katherine Dimmick, a senior, described the premise of the story.

“The Chinese Emperor held a race on his birthday so that there would be a way of telling time, hence the 12-year cycle. It’s a very cute story and skit,” Dimmick said.

The Jewish Culture Club will also perform a skit written by senior Tom Poepping that tells the story of Passover and explains the significance of its traditions.

“Passover is a very important Jewish holiday and we decided since it is coming up in April that it would be good idea to educate people about it now,” said Michael Auron, a senior and president of the club.

“Since this is the first time Sewickley Academy has had a Jewish Culture Club in four years, we are hoping it will go well and help reestablish our club to get more members for next year,” Auron said.

Senior Antonio Juliano will sing an Italian opera song to represent the French and Italian Club.

The German club will perform the ballad "An Die Musik" by Austrian composer Franz Schubert, written to express his love of music.

“The most important part of the evening is celebrating our differences to help everyone understand each other,” said Carroll.
