PA Laws and Electronic Recycling

I often get questions regarding the disposal of electronics.  Here's an update on the new laws and recycling options for you.

Beginning January 24, 2013,  Pennsylvania will be one of 25 states that will implement laws on electronic waste.  Bottom line:  you can no longer leave your electronics at the curb and expect the garbage truck to pick up.

Devices covered under the new law will require consumers to recycle through designated facilities or during special electronic recycyling collection events.

Devices covered include: televisions, tablets ( ipads, Kindles), desktop and laptop computers, computer monitors and accessories such as printers.

To locate an e-cycle event near you, visit http://www.alleghenycounty.us/alleghenygreen/recycle.aspx

The Salvation Army, GoodWill and Best Buy have long-standing electronic reycling programs in place.  You can also find other e-cyclers near you by visiting the       E-Loop website at http://www.eloopllc.com/eLoopLLC/elpwebsite.nsf/web/eCycle?opendocument

The availability of e-waste options will surely grow in time, the greater concern will be the removal of personal information from your device before donating. The National Center for Electronics Recycling notes that most electronic recyclers have policies requiring hard drives to be cleared, but suggested that consumers purchase software that allows them to wipe the drives clean on their own.

Hello Sandra, We have been offering free electronic recycling at the Center of Harmony through eLoop LLC. eLoop LLC was the first "de-manufacturing" facilities approved by the PA DEP. Based in Murrysville, PA, they have 98% landfill avoidance, no prison labor, and no offshore dumping. They are a great organization and we are proud to be the first eLoop LLC drop off center in Butler County.
We collected over 7 tons of waste from April through the end of the year, before the ban was enacted!
eLoop LLC has locations around western PA, The Center of Harmony is one local drop off location to have e-waste responsibly recycled. Drop off 24/7. More information online at. http://thecenterofharmony.com/e-waste-recycling/

I think the more drop- off locations that people know about, the better. Thanks for sharing Josh.
