Welcome back, Patch Blogger!
We wish you a Merry Christmas, we wish you a Merry Christmas, we wish you a Merry Christmas—and a Happy New Year from Patch! We’d like to give our readers the opportunity to wish their loved ones a Merry Christmas today. Leave a greeting or a holiday memory of a special someone in the comment section below and have it appear (prominently) in our shout out box. As we move into 2013, we want to remind you that this is your site—and you can use it to your advantage. When it comes down to it, behind just about every small business is an entrepreneur hoping to turn their passion into a paycheck. But, as many wise business advisers have noted: Hope is not a strategy. Business owners need support to turn dreams into reality. That's why Patch is pleased to announce a new partnership with SCORE, a nonprofit organization with 12,000 business experts nationwide who provide free mentoring to small business owners. The partnership makes sense because we believe that when local commerce grows, the whole community gets stronger. Patch already provides free listings …
Woo-hoo! Today, it’s official. Dec. 30 marks exactly one year ago that Sewickley Patch launched. Amazing, right? I still can’t believe it’s already been a year. Over the past 12 months, Sewickley Patch has received an incredible amount of feedback, sometimes through e-mail or Facebook messages but mostly in quick passing conversations. All of the feedback, support, interest, even criticism, means more to me than you can imagine.  It usually happens when I least expect it. I remember sitting in the audience, waiting for a council meeting to start when the topic of Sewickley Patch somehow came …
We recently launched a new look for our local listings pages, changing the name from "Directory" to "Places" on our navigation bar. You'll notice on our Places page an increase in featured local listings as well as an easier way to rate and review listings you have visited. Here are a few things to check out: - Rate your neighborhood right from our Places page and quickly reshuffle listings by clicking "Get More" at the top or bottom of the page. - To rate a listing, simply click the number of stars under the business name. - Have something to say about a listing? Write a review by clicking "…
Things change fast at Sewickley Patch. Up until now, we've primarily been a news operation, written by our staff and freelancers. But soon, very soon, we're hoping to add a new voice to the site: Yours. There are already plenty of ways to contribute to Patch—by leaving comments on our articles, by posting to our events calendar, by posting announcements and by taking part in our Q&A forum, among them. But now we're introducing a new site section, for community blogs. And we want you to be a part of it. Got something to say about life in the Sewickley Valley or news to spread? Need a forum for…
I’m excited that the Pittsburgh Steelers are in the Super Bowl -- yet again -- going for lucky number seven against the Green Bay Packers. The saying used to be “One for the Thumb.” I guess now we need “One for the Pinky?” We may not all have tickets to see the big game in Dallas, but knowing our hardscrabble city is thisclose to bringing home the Lombardi Trophy makes it hard not to feel proud of the Steelers and what they’ve accomplished. I'll insert a favorite cliche here: "It's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game." Because even harder to ignore is how the Steelers …
Want headlines from Sewickley Patch delivered directly to your blog or Web site? Now, you can stream all the Sewickley area news — or just certain categories — directly there for you and your visitors. It was one of several changes made to the Sewickley Patch site this past week that also include free classified ads and a news feed from nearby Patch sites. With a new widget feature, you can create a box that's easily insertable into blogs and Web pages. It's also customizable by topic, so if you just want sports, you can limit to sports or if you just want police and fire news, you get police…
Initially, I thought it a bit unusual that the first African-American coach ever to win a Super Bowl, with all his notoriety, would focus his highly-sought-after attention on the reading habits of the littlest among us -- children. But then I thought, why not? Former Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy and his wife, Lauren, an Edgeworth native, were in the Sewickley area on Wednesday to promote their children’s book, “You Can Be A Friend.” Tony Dungy, who has written several books, including a memoir, retired from coaching after the 2008 football season, but he obviously never stopped …
