2013 Primary Results: Newcomers Win School Board Nominations

Two newcomers in Region 3 will also vie for one seat in the general election.

Two newcomers and an incumbent won nominations for Quaker Valley School Board in Tuesday's primary election, while two others will vie for one seat in the general election. Quaker Valley alumni Daniela Sauro Helkowski and Jonathan Kuzma won both the Democratic and Republican nominations in Region 1 for Quaker Valley School Director. The two are endorsed by the Concerned Taxpayers of Quaker Valley, a group opposed to the district purchasing homes near the high school for construction purposes.  Incumbent Sarah Heres, who ran unopposed, also won nominations from both parties in Region 2. Quaker Valley School Board: Who Are You Voting for, and Why?

There are four four-year terms up for grabs on Quaker Valley School Board this year. All of the candidates are cross-filed, which means they are running for the nomination of both the Republican and Democratic parties. Incumbent board members Debbie Miller and Kay Wijekumar are not seeking re-election in Region 1, and Danielle Burnette is not seeking re-election in Region 3. Incumbent Seeks Another Term on Quaker Valley School Board

Sarah Heres is the lone candidate for one seat in Region 2, which represents Sewickley.

Sarah Heres is the only incumbent member of the Quaker Valley School Board seeking re-election. A Sewickley resident, Heres has served on the school board for five and a half years and on the Sewickley Public Library board of directors for three years. Heres graduated from Boston University with a bachelor of science in Business Administration. She is currently a "community volunteer" with years of experience as an active volunteer with local non-profits, including Quaker Valley, The Laughlin Center, and The Presbyterian Church, Sewickley, as well as chairwoman of the Cancer & Blood Disorder Auxiliary of the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation. Glen Osborne Resident, Former School Director Seeks Seat on Quaker Valley School Board

Mary Ann Wagner is one of two candidates running for one seat in Region 3, which represents Aleppo, Edgeworth, Glenfield, Haysville, Glen Osborne, Sewickley Heights and Sewickley Hills.

Mary Ann Wagner, 71, of Glen Osborne, previously served for 12 years on the Quaker Valley School Board. She is currently serves on the district's Public Budget Committee, a group of about 25 to 30 local taxpayers. Wagner, who is retired, is a former sales representative for L'Oreal Paris and U.S. Steel. She was also a credit analyst for U.S. Steel. Her interests include antiques and she is a volunteer at Pittsburgh's Hidden Treasures held each year at Heinz History Center. She also enjoys playing Bridge. Daniela Sauro Helkowski is one of four candidates running for two seats in Region 1, which represents Leetsdale, Bell Acres and Leet Township.

Daniela Sauro Helkowski of Quaker Heights, Leet Township, is a lifetime resident of the Quaker Valley community. After graduating from Quaker Valley High School, she went on to pursue a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh, and an education certification from Slippery Rock University. Besides working part-time at her husband’s Allstate Insurance office in Sewickley, she is primarily a stay-at-home mom. She is also a CCD teacher at St. James Parish, a member of the Osborne Home & School Association, chair of the Book Fair, homeroom parent, basketball coach, and a board member of the Quaker Valley Midget Football Association. Lawyer, Quaker Valley Parent Seeks Seat on QV School Board

David Weicht is one of four candidates running for two seats in Region 1, which represents Leetsdale, Bell Acres and Leet Township.

David Weicht, 45, of Leet Township, has been a Quaker Valley School District resident since 1999. He has a degree in psychology from Georgetown University and a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania.  Weicht is an attorney and a partner with the law firm of Leech Tishman Fuscaldo & Lampl.  He and his wife, CJ, have four children in Quaker Valley schools.  Ryan, 13, and Julia, 13, are both in seventh grade; Natalie, 11, is in sixth grade; and Eric, 8, is in second grade.  This is Weicht's first time running for office. Weicht said he's excited about the opportunity to serve the community on the school board.
