P. Richard Warburton is one of four candidates running for two seats in Region 1, which represents Leetsdale, Bell Acres and Leet Township.
P. Richard Warburton, 48, has lived in Leet Township since 2007. His family moved from Moon, in large part, to be in the Quaker Valley School District. Warburton has a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Southampton (UK) and a law degree (J.D.) from Duquesne University. He is the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and General Counsel for ChemDAQ Inc., a manufacturer of gas detection monitors for workplace safety in Robinson Township. This is Warburton's first time running for any public office and he is running on a platform of "Quality Education with Fiscal Responsibility." Jonathan Kuzma, 30, of Victory Lane in Leetsdale, is a 2001 graduate of Quaker Valley High School. He attended The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA and graduated in 2005 with a degree in Economics and History. After college, Kuzma began working as a researcher and later as a real estate appraiser for Integra Realty Resources in Pittsburgh, which is a commercial valuation and consulting firm. Kuzma grew up in Leet and has extended family in the district, including his parents Greg and Cindy, sisters Emily and Marissa, grandparents Eugene and Lilian, and an aunt, uncle and their three children. Pennsylvania residents who wish to vote in the upcoming May 21 primary elections must be registered by Monday, April 22. Registered voters who have moved or changed their names or party affiliations must also notify their counties' elections divisions of their changes by April 22. An individual must be registered in a political party in order to vote in that party's primary. In order to qualify to vote in Pennsylvania, one must be a U.S. citizen at least one month prior to the primary, a resident of the state and his or her election district at least 30 days prior to the primary, and 18 years of age on or before the day of the primary. Leetsdale Borough plans to host several "Meet and Greet" sessions with local legislators and candidates for various offices. The first session at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 4 is open to all candidates seeking election for any seat that serves the borough, including council, mayor, school board and tax collector. Candidates are invited to meet and address the public if they desire. The public is also welcome to attend to hear the candidates' platforms and ask questions. U.S. Reps Tom Murphy (R-Upper St. Clair), Mark Critz (D-Johnstown), Jason Altmire (D-McCandless) and Mike Kelly (R-Butler) of Pennsylvania accepted thousands in 2012 campaign contributions from the National Rifle Association, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. The NRA doled out more than $750,000 in campaign contributions in 2012, according to the center, a research organization that tracks money in politics and how it affects elections and policies and shares the information on OpenSecrets.org. The center obtained its data from the Federal Election Commission. Rep. Jason Altmire, D-McCandless, has accepted a position with Florida Blue, the state's Blue Cross and Blue Shield health insurer, as a senior vice president for public policy, government, and community affairs. Altmire, a three-term congressman, has been looking for a job since losing the primary to fellow Democrat, Rep. Mark Critz, D-Johnstown , when their two districts were reshaped into one by a GOP redistricting map. Critz lost the general election to Republican Keith Rothfus. Despite GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s loss on election night Nov. 6, Sewickley Republican and U.S. Rep.-elect Keith Rothfus pulled out a big win in a hard-fought battle against Democratic opponent Mark Critz.
