Patriot Day: 5 Ways to Commemorate 9/11 in Sewickley

Americans across the country will observe Patriot Day in honor of those who lost their lives in the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

Here are five ways you can observe it in and around Sewickley:

1. Flag Retirement Ceremony with Troop 572

Boy Scout Troop 572 will be conducting a Flag Retirement Ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11 at the Valley Veterans Association, 108 East Beaver St. in Glenfield.

If you have American Flags that you would like to be properly retired, feel free to please bring them and join the Scouts for a very patriotic service on Patriots Day.

2. Service of Remembrance and Hope

The Sewickley United Methodist Church, 337 Broad St. in Sewickley, will honor and recognize our Local Heroes: police personnel, fire fighters, EMTs, paramedics, military, mayors, council members and many other service personnel at the 11 a.m. worship service on Sunday, Sept. 15.

The worship opportunity will also observe a special 9/11 remembrance service titled, “From Remembrance to Hope.” A white rose will be presented in memory of all those who perished that fateful day.  

The Chancel Choir, under the direction of Charles Wilson will provide special music appropriate for the day. The Rev. Russel Shuluga, pastor, will bring the morning message.

A time of fellowship and refreshments will follow the service where there will be an opportunity to greet and personally thank the dedicated men and women who serve our communities daily. For more information and/or questions call the church office at 412-741-9430. All are welcome.

3. Flag Retirement and Remembrance Ceremony 

Allegheny County is hosting a flag retirement and remembrance ceremony in honor of those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. The free event takes place at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the North Park Flag Retirement Plaza.

4. Patriotic Concert

Enjoy patriotic and country songs in honor of those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001 with emerging star Kevin Dale. The Courtyard Concert Series with Kevin Dale takes place from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Allegheny County Courthouse Courtyard.

5. Cranberry Township Memorial Ceremony

Cranberry Township Public Safety services are hosting a ceremony Wednesday to honor 9/11 first responders and victims.

The ceremony will be at Park Fire Station on Route 19, where the fire company erected a memorial of old debris last year from the World Trade Center on the same site.

The fire company will raise the American flag from its tower truck on at 6 a.m. Firefighter John Pristas will play taps during the times each plane crashed as well as the times the World Trade Center buildings fell.
