5 Things to Know This Week: Battle of the Books and Sweetwater Open House

1. Battle of the Books

Sewickley Public Library will hold the Battle of the Books competition this week starting with the sixth grade on Tuesday, Feb. 26 and the seventh and eighth grades on Wednesday, Feb. 27. The high school competition is on Monday, March 4. The battles take place in Hansen Library at Sewickley Academy.

2. Sweetwater's Open House

From 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 1 the gallery at Sweetwater Center for the Arts  will showcase the talent of students and instructors during an Open House and Artist Reception. Sweetwater offers more than 500 classes annually, taught by artists and educators with outstanding qualifications, beginning from age 3 up to adult.

3. DVD Collection

Have any old DVDs that are just taking up space in your house? Girl Scout Troop 50329 is holding a DVD drive for residents of the Union Aid Society Building located in Sewickley. Drop off new or gently used DVDs in boxes at St. James Parish, Clay Café, Sewickley Public Library, the Sewickley Valley YMCA, or the four main offices of Quaker Valley schools. The deadline for dropoff is Friday, March 1. 

 

4. 7th Annual Maple Sugaring Celebration and Pancake Breakfast

Visit Fern Hollow Nature Center starting at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 2 for a breakfast of traditional or buckwheat pancakes, sausage and a drink. 5. Brave American 5K Race & 1 Mile Walk

Registrations are being accepted online for the second annual race. Rob Veltre, a junior at Quaker Valley High School, is organizing the event to benefit the Boulder Crest Retreat for Wounded Warriors.  Click here to register online
