5 Things to Know This Week: Pi Day, St. Patrick's Day and Soup Crawl

Patch gives you a rundown of what's going on around the community.

1. St. Patrick's Day

Sunday, March 17, is St. Patrick's Day and it is expected to be widely celebrated, whether it's the annual parade Downtown, corned beef and cabbage with the family or green beer and Guinness. St. James Parish with the Knights of Columbus will celebrate with a St. Patrick’s Day Dinner Dance from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, March 16 in the St. James School Gym. 2. Pi Day

Thursday, March 14 is Pi Day. Pi is the symbol used in mathematics to represent approximately 3.14159 (3.14). In celebration, the Sewickley Public Library is having a Pie Baking Contest. Bring in a pie that you’ve made and a panel of guest judges pick the best one. Contest is open to all ages. Register if you want to participate because a limited number of spots are available.

3. PIHL Semifinals and PIAA Championships

The Quaker Valley hockey team faces off against the Kittanning Wildcats in the PIHL semifinals at 8 p.m. today, March 11, at the Robert Morris University Island Sports Center. Come out and support the team. Several swimmers and one diver qualified to compete in the PIAA state championships on Tuesday, March 12 to Thursday, March 14 at Bucknell University.

4. Sewickley Soup Crawl

On Saturday, March 16 the Sewickley Soup Crawl will commence. Take a stroll through the village from noon to 3 p.m. while trying a number of different soups. Tickets are on sale at showclix.com

5. Fire Safety Open House

Nick Volk, a Quaker Valley sophomore and firefighter at the Cochran Hose Fire Station, is holding a free Fire Safety Open House from noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 17. There event at the Thorn Street station includes fire safety tips for children, free Sewickley Confectionery ice cream, hotdogs, fire truck rides and tours, and an opportunity for children to spray a fire hose.
