Celebrating 50 Golden Years: Sewickley Civic Garden Council Invites Community to Plant Daffodils

In celebration of the 50th anniversary, SCGC plans to paint the town gold with daffodils this spring.

The Sewickley Civic Garden Council invites the community to help paint the town gold with daffodils this spring.

On Wednesday, Oct. 16 the organization will meet at 10 a.m. at Wolcott Park for a photo and  subsequent planting of 50 daffodil bulbs at a variety of locations including, but not limited to: the Sewickley Post Office, the Sewickley Public Library, Wolcott Park, Park Place and community gardens.

The community is invited to join the gathering of participating garden clubs, churches, schools and community organizations. Anyone interested in participating should bring bulbs to plant. Robinson's in Sewickley carries a variety of bulb.

The garden council has events planned each month through the end of the year in celebration of its 50th anniversary.

"Every 50 steps taken around the town of Sewickley brings you face to face with the influences of the Sewickley Civic Garden Council. Many areas of Sewickley have been touched by volunteer hours and donations from SCGC including Park Place on the boulevard, the YMCA, a few parklets, Riverfront Park, Municipal Buildings, the Post Office, Library, Hospital, Schools and the Community Center," the nonprofit said.

Call for photography submissions
This fall as SCGC celebrates 50 years of operation, the organization is calling for photo submissions of amateur photography taken of private or public garden spaces in Sewickley and the surrounding boroughs.

Photos submitted by Thursday, Oct. 31 to Sewickleygardens@gmail.com will be reviewed for inclusion in a 8x8 full color, hard back book sold by pre-order through the same email address or any Garden Club member.

Luncheon, wreath making
The garden council will continue its celebration in November with a luncheon gathering of past presidents of SCGC at a member’s home and culminates with a wreath-making workshop from 1 to 3 p.m. at the United Methodist Church on Wednesday, Dec. 4.

Wreaths made during the workshop will adorn the storefronts and various other public places during Light Up Night. Golden ribbons from the wreaths will trail into the New Year in anticipation of the daffodil bulbs to burst forth next spring.

Support SCGC

SCGC also invites anyone interested in the conservation and beautification of Sewickley to support the council’s work with their membership and participation in ongoing educational programs.
