Get Out: Winter Break Activities

What's a family to do for the entire week between Christmas and New Year's Day? A lot! Read on for ideas on how to keep the whole family happy and in the holiday spirit this week.

1. Ice Skating

This is the perfect time of year to hit an outdoor ice rink. Whether at North Park, PPG Place or the Penguins Pond at SouthSide Works, kids of all ages can enjoy a family skate.  Check the rinks' websites above for pricing and public skating schedules.

2. Phipps Conservatory Winter Flower Show

Phipps Conservatory has been transformed for the holidays with poinsettias, twinkling lights and aromatic pines. There are also magical scenes from The Nutcracker, complete with gingerbread houses and a Sugarplum fairy. The conservatory will also host Family Fun Days from Dec. 26-30 that include crafts, as well as a New Year's Eve celebration. The winter flower show runs through Jan. 8. For more information, visit Phipps Conservatory's website.

3. Hartwood Celebration of Lights

Although it's a bit of a drive from Sewickley, the Hartwood Celebration of Lights in Hampton is worth the trip. The lights show spans more than three miles and includes new displays at the entrance and exit points of the park. Proceeds benefit The Salvation Army's Project Bundle-up, as well as the Woodlands Foundation in Bradford Woods. The lights display runs through Jan. 8 and the suggested donation is $10 per car. Hours of operation are from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. daily.

4. Carnegie Museum of Pittsburgh

The Carnegie Museum of Art and History in Oakland has decked the halls for the holidays and there is a lot to see! From a holiday tree display to a Neopolitan Nativity scene that was crafted between 1700 and 1830, there is something for everyone. Plus, the museum offers holiday vacation day camps for kids. Visit the museum's website to learn more.

5. First Night

Let's face it, New Year's Eve is always full of great expectations and can be rather disappointing, especially when you can't get a babysitter. This year, make it easy on yourself and take the kids (big or small) to First Night downtown. Hosted by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, the celebration includes crafts for kids, live music and a fireworks finale. Admission is $8 if bought in advance at $10 on the night of the event. Visit First Night Pittsburgh's website for more information.
