Camp Bow Wow Closes Temporarily to Prevent Spread of Stomach Bug

The dog day camp plans to reopen May 2.

A dog camp in the North Hills voluntarily closed its doors for more than a week after some of the dogs in its care became sick.

Jordan Murray is the owner of Camp Bow Wow, located at 2327 Babcock Boulevard in Ross.

"In the North Hills, there were growing reports of a gastrointestinal bug. Veterinarians tell us it's not very significant in terms of health issues, but there is a risk of dehydration because there are some vomiting and diarrhea symptoms," he said.

"We had a number of clients that had been to camp that had reported their dog’s had had this illness, and rather than ignore it, because we always put dog care and dog safety first, we felt the best thing to do was shut down for a few days to give the regular campers, that had experienced this illness, time to clear it from their systems before they would come and contaminate some of our other clients."

Murray said dog owners should watch for dehydration in their pets.

"We’ve been told by the veterinarians to just keep an eye on it and especially younger and older dogs, like any human illness, are the most likely to be adversely effected by it," he said.

Murray said the facility plans to reopen on May 2.

"Camp Bow Wow prides itself on being the most fun and safe place in Pittsburgh for dogs to stay and play," he said. "We believe that we live up to that every day and that’s why we’ve chosen to close down for a few days."
