Saving the Memories of Those Who Served

The Veterans History Project is gathering memories of soldiers from wars past and present to provide a living history for future generations.

They gathered in the library at Quaker Valley High School, some to listen, some to share stories, all to learn from each other.

The Veterans History Project is gathering memories of soldiers from wars past and present to provide a living history for future generations.

On Wednesday, students in Brittany Bossola's social studies class filmed interviews with soldiers ranging from World War II to those currently in active service. The event, initiated through the office of Congressman Jason Altmire and the Library of Congress, was the sixth outreach program held in Southwestern Pa.

One of the veterans who spoke with students was Warren Goss, a member of the 531st Special Brigade, one of the first troops to storm the beaches of Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944.  On the other end of the spectrum is Commander Thomas Benedict, U.S. Navy, who is still in active service.

Once the recordings are edited, the videos will become part of a large database that is available online, making it easy to look back at various conflicts the United States have been involved in over the years through the eyes of those who were there.
