Sewickley's First Ever Oktoberfest Celebration Runs Friday and Saturday

Village Green Partners and Sharp Edge Bistro will hold Sewickley's first-ever Oktoberfest on Friday and Saturday in the Village.

Organizers are gearing up for the event, which will take place under a large 90-by-40 foot tent in the Division Street parking lot next to Sharp Edge. The event is a fundraiser for Village Green, a non-profit that works to promote the Village of Sewickley, and is expected to attract a nice crowd.

"It seems like a lot of people are talking about it and are excited about it," said Alex DeLoia, Village Green social media strategist.

The two-night Oktoberfest kicks off 5 to 11 p.m. Friday. The tent reopens for food and drinks from 4 to 11 p.m. Saturday.

Entertainment

Friday's entertainment line up includes live music by Pittsburgh-based German band Gaudi Buam from 6 to 9 p.m. followed by Locals Only, a group of Sewickley musicians, performing from 9 to 10:30 p.m.

Music, games and contests continue on Saturday with the Das Dachshund Dash, a 10-yard weiner dog race. Registration begins at 4:30 p.m. and the race runs from 5 to 8 p.m.

Musical entertainment by German accordionist Conrad Ostertag is from 5 to 8 p.m., followed by the Continental Dukes from 8:15 to 10:15 p.m. 

Contests will take place during band breaks on both days, including best costume, pretzel toss and beer stein holding.

Beer and Drinks

DeLoia said Sharp Edge is providing food and beer for the event. One beer to look forward to is the Spaten Oktoberfest, a German amber lager, and Spaten Lager, beer balances between hops and a malty sweetness.

Both beers will be served in traditional Litre glasses. German Riesling will be available for non-beer-drinkers.

German Eats

And then there's the food. The German food menu includes traditional sandwiches with sauerkraut like bratwurst, kielbasa, knockwurst and pulled pork.

Potato pancakes with sour cream and applesauce, hot German potato salad, and homemade pretzel knots will also be served. In addition to sandwiches, full dinner platters will be available. Desserts include black forrest cake and German chocolate cake.

Children are allowed in the tent until 8 p.m. Revelers must be 21 or older after 8 p.m. Cost is $5 for adults and $2 for children 12 and under.

DeLoia said Village Green hopes to make the Bavarian tradition an annual Sewickley event.

"Obviously we're going to see how it goes," she said.
