Shopowner Welcomes Newcomers to Sewickley

Kelsey Rhea makes it her business to help people feel at home once they've landed in town. Considering the kind of place Sewickley is, that's not such a difficult task.

Talking to Kelsey Rhea, you get the feeling she's never had much trouble making new friends, wherever she's been, but the resident and Beaver Street shop owner wants to help Sewickley's newest residents get to know the town and find a tribe here.

Rhea, 28, is president of Newcomers and Neighbors of Sewickley, an organization that reaches out to the area's recent arrivals to make them feel welcome. She became involved after moving here from Austin, Texas, and finding a warm community of child-friendly streets and front porch chats. As leader of the organization, she has found that those choosing to live or move here are a group diverse in age, ethnicity and interests -- a rich mix that she says accounts for the vibrancy of the community.

The Newcomers and Neighbors of Sewickley offers a variety of volunteer and social activities to encourage people to mingle and to network, including dinners, dances and occasional girls' nights out.
