UPDATE: School CLOSED for Quaker Valley and Sewickley Academy

Overnight snowfall causes school and other cancellations.

After enjoying spring-like weather on Tuesday, fresh snowfall blanketed the area overnight and is expected to last until this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

Quaker Valley, Sewickley Academy and St. James are all closed today due to the inclement weather.  

Some organizations like the North Boroughs Sewickley Area Meals on Wheels and businesses, such as Ragged Row remain closed today.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning effective through 5 p.m. for Allegheny County, and a winter weather advisory remains in effect for Beaver and Butler counties.

Morning commuters should leave extra time for traveling as crews work to clear the roadways.

The period of the most intense snow is expected until 8 a.m., the weather service said. 

When it's all said and done, the weather service expects 4-to-8 inches of snow accumulation in this area, with even heavier snow totals in the Laurel Highlands of Fayette, Westmoreland and Somerset counties.
