YMCA 'Spectrum Series' Focuses on Kids with Autism

Thanks to a successful fund-raising motorcycle run, the new developmental programs are free for families and children with autism spectrum conditions.

A memorial ride in support of autistic kids will go a long way to provide area families with beneficial programs.

Trish Hooper, CEO of the , said proceeds raised in August from the make it possible for the YMCA to offer a series of free programs for families and children with autism spectrum conditions.

The "Spectrum Series" provides developmental programs, such as swimming lessons, creative learning and recreational activities.

“The Buddy Matthews ride made it accessible to all families,” Hooper said.

Linda Voshall organized the 82-mile motorcycle ride at the in memory of her late son, Buddy Matthews, who died Aug. 22, 2009 in a motorcycle crash. The cause was dear to because he and wife Tricia have a 10-year-old son who has autism, family members said.

Barb Herman, a YMCA employee and Voshall's friend, volunteered with the ride and said $7,500 was donated to the to support programs for children with autism.

“It’s all going to be free because of the fact that we raised so much money,” Herman said.

Hooper said all fees associated with the series of programs are waived for participating members and non-members even though the new program guide lists costs for the classes. The guide was printed before the donation arrived to cover the costs, she said.

Hooper said the Y received repeated requests from families asking the Y to offer programs for autistic kids. Summer camps at the Y this year attracted hundreds of children, some of whom were autistic.

“We saw there was a real need in the community we could address,” Hooper said.

While the programs are free, families must sign up in order to participate. To join a class, contact the registration desk at the Y at 724-741-9622.
