Fern Hollow Nature Center to Host Second Amazing Parks Race

The fundraiser directly supports education programs at the nature center.

Are you up for a challenge?

Fern Hollow Nature Center is kicking off the summer on Saturday, June 8 with an event that showcases all of the parks in the community and provides families a day of family fun outside.

The second annual Amazing Parks Race, which runs from 3 to 6 p.m., imitates CBS's the Amazing Race and highlights all eight parks in the Quaker Valley area.

Each team, or car load, will be given clues to direct them to a local park.  Once there, they will have to complete a challenge that's either physical or mental in order to earn their next clue for another location.

The race includes bonus challenges and a few other twists.

The team with the best overall time wins, but plenty of other awards will be given too.

The race ends at FHNC for an awards ceremony and ice cream provided by Sewickley Confectionery. Teams are invited to bring their own picnic dinner and linger on the Fern Hollow grounds to watch the sunset

Cost to participate is $30 per team for FHNC members and $40 per team for non-members. Teams can consist of all adults, families or children with a driver.  The only requirement is that the entire team fits into one car.

Special discounts and incentives will be given to any team using bicycles.  To register your team call 412-741-6136 or email info@fhnc.org

Sam Capezzuto, executive director of Fern Hollow, said this fundraiser directly supports the education programs at Fern Hollow Nature Center, which offers more than 60 hands-on inquiry based science programs for local schools each year focusing on Pennsylvania wildlife and habitat, geology, local watersheds and more.

"Last year over 3,000 students from 12 schools participated in those programs," Capezzuto said.
