Music Plus Concert to Feature Trio Verlaine

The free community concert series is open to all audience ages. A pre-concert features Debbie Silverstein, directing the Beaver County Flute Choirs.

Enjoy a classic music concert today with Trio Verlaine. The performers are making a stop at St. James Church this afternoon.

Trio Verlaine stars Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra's principal flute Lorna McGhee, David Harding, a violist who teaches at Carnegie Mellon University, and Vancouver Orchestra's principal harp Heidi Krutzen.

The 3 p.m. concert will be preceeded at 2:30 p.m. by a pre-concert featuring Debbie Silverstein, directing the Beaver County Flute Choirs. A dessert and beverage reception will follow the concert, with a chance to meet all the musicians.

Series director Sharron Schaefer, associate director of music at St. James, noted that this concert will be a wonderful opportunity for flute, viola and harp students and enthusiasts.

The Music Plus Concert Series is a free community concert series open to all audience ages.  All concerts are free-will offering and take place in the sanctuary of St. James Catholic Church, 200 Walnut St.

About the performers:

David Harding is Professor of Viola and Chamber Music at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh. He has an extensive solo and chamber music career, having performed throughout Europe, the United States, Canada, Central America and Australia, in such venues as the chamber music halls of  Berlin Philharmonie and Concertgebouw, and Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall. His performances have been broadcast on CBC, BBC, NPR, ABC (Australia) and Deutschland Radio.

Heidi Krutzen is principal harpist of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra and former principal harpist of the CBC Radio Orchestra.  She has been guest principal harpist of the Toronto Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic and Vancouver Symphony Orchestras. Heidi teaches at the University of British Columbia, and is on faculty at the National Youth Orchestra Canada.  She can frequently be heard with her own chamber groups Couloir, Trio Verlaine, and the Krutzen/McGhee Duo. Her performances and recordings have been broadcast on BBC Radio 3, NPR (US), CBC Radio (Canada), Northern German Radio and Netherlands Radio.

Scottish-born Lorna McGhee is principal flute with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. She has performed as guest principal with Chicago Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, London Symphony, London Philharmonic, Academy of St-Martin-in-the-Fields, Chamber Orchestra of Europe and the Vancouver Symphony. Before emigrating to North America in 1998, Lorna was co-principal flute of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, England.
