The restaurant co-founded by former firefighters is one of 23 new food establishments to open in Allegheny County.

A new Firehouse Subs restaurant has opened for business in North Fayette, becoming one of 23 new food establishments to open last month in Allegheny County, according to the county Health Department.

The specialty sandwich shop is located in the Pointe at North Fayette, in the same strip as Chipotle, Five Guys and Burgatory.

Firehouse Subs serves up a variety of hot and cold subs in a fast casual environment.

The restaurant is part of a franchise founded nearly two decades ago in Jacksonville, FL by former firefighter brothers Robin and Chris Sorensen.

Matt Liggett, who is the area representative for Firehouse Subs in Western Pennsylvania, told Patch in an interview last year, that he was scouting locations for a new restaurant in Robinson with a goal to open 35 to 38 Firehouse Subs in the Pittsburgh market over the next seven years.

The restaurant chain has more than 600 locations across the country, including Puerto Rico, with a long-term goal of 2,000 restaurants by 2020.

When it comes to hot subs, the restaurant steams the customers' chosen meat before being placing it on toasted bread. A popular seller is the “Hook & Ladder,” which consists of smoked turkey, Virginia honey ham and Monterey Jack cheese.

Restaurant hours are 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Along with Firehouse Subs at 320 McHolme Drive, the Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery, also opened last month in North Fayette.

In all, Allegheny County had 12 new restaurant openings, three confectionaries, two mobile vendors, two convenience stores, two grocery stores, one retailer, and one caterer.
