Pittsburgh Botanic Garden Tour Includes Historic Edgeworth Estate

An Edgeworth garden on the tour hasn't been open to the public since the 1990s.

A garden that hasn’t been open to the public since the 1990s will be open to guests once again Sunday as part of the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden Town & Country Tour.

The 12-acre, historic Newington estate, which dates back to 1785, will be one of five -area gardens to be featured.  Fourteen gardens in all will be showcased on the tour leading from Sewickley to Ben Avon, Observatory Hill, Brighton Heights, and ending with six gardens in the South Side of Pittsburgh.

The Newington garden features formal garden ruins, archways, an arboretum and panoramic views, said Kitty Vagley, development director of the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden.

It’s not the only spectacular space on display.

“Each of these gardens is a prize -- they’re all so different,” Vagley said.

She describes one particular gardener’s land as an amazing work of art, built over many years.

“[That gardener] has so much knowledge about gardening and different trees,” Vagley said.  “I hope [guests] will be delighted by what they see, that they’ll be educated by the gardens and the gardeners, [and] be inspired to appreciate the beauty of gardens everywhere.”

The Town & Country tour is a fundraiser for the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden. Tour books are provided and include driving and parking directions.  Volunteers will join gardeners at each site from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will be available to answer questions about plants and the history of each space.

Tickets are $50 (with a $10 discount for members), and can be purchased at , and lifestyle store, in Sewickley.

The Pittsburgh Botanic Garden is currently under development, but it plans to open its first phase in October of 2012. Its first garden will be an Appalachian plateau woodland forest. Earlier this year, workers planted 167 native trees for that phase.
