Seafood Companies Recall Salmon, Lox and Fish Products

King & Prince and Noya Brand fish products are affected by two separate recalls due to potentially dangerous contamination. Both companies distributed the fish products to stores around the country.

Two national seafood-production firms are recalling salmon and other fish products due to potentially dangerous contamination before distribution to stores around the country, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration said.

No illnesses have been linked to fish products affected by two separate recalls, according to the FDA.

King & Prince Seafood Corp. of Brunswick, GA, is recalling Nova-style cold smoked salmon and sable fish lox, salmon sushi fillets and salmon trim because it is potentially contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeria may cause potentially fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The King & Prince products were distributed nationwide through brokers and foodservice distributors starting on Oct. 4, according to the FDA. The seafood products are frozen when distributed but may be sold as refrigerated at retail stores.

All Nova Style, pre-sliced, cold smoked products, sushi fillets and salmon trims are packed in vacuum pouches and distributed frozen.

Products affected by the recall are marked with one of the following production Date Codes, and they are observed on the individual pouches and master cases: 1277W, 1278W, 1279W, 1280W, 1281W, 1283W, 1284W, 1285W, 1286W, 1287W, 1290W, 1291W, 1292W, 1293W, 1294W, 1297W, 1298W, 1299W, 1300W, 1303W, 1306W, 1311W, 1312W, 1313W, 1314W.

Also affected by a recall is Noya Brand Boyal Dry Fish, which was not handled properly during processing and may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum spores, the FDA said. The dry fish also was sold nationwdie.

Four Star Import & Distribution Inc. of Brooklyn, NY, is recalling Noya Brand Boyal Dry Fish after the New York Department of Agriculture analyzed and confirmed that the fish was not properly eviscerated prior to processing.

New York agriculture and markets regulations prohibit the sale of this fish because Clostridium botulinum spores are more likely to be concentrated in the viscera than any other portion of the fish. Uneviscerated fish has been linked to outbreaks of botulism poisoning, a potentially fatal food-borne illness caused by Clostridium botulinum spores.

Symptoms of botulism include blurred or double vision, weakness, poor reflexes, difficulty swallowing and respiratory paralysis.

The recalled Noya Brand Boyal Dry Fish is sold in 200-gram plastic bag that bear the code "Best Before Dec. 2012" and are marked as a product of Bangladesh.

Consumers who have Noya Brand Boyal Dry Fish are advised not to eat it and to return it to the place of purchase. Consumer with questions may contact the company at 718-366-6580.
