Sewickley will likely become home to a new two-screen movie theater.
Village Theater Company, a newly-formed non-profit organization in Sewickley, is spearheading the effort to get the new theater up and running.
In a press release, the group said they want the theater to run not only American independent and foreign films but also second run and older films .
“So many of us remember growing up with a local cinema, where we spent an entire Saturday afternoon with our friends. Our goal is to bring a family movie theater back to Sewickley,” explained , president of the board of Village Theater Company.
So far, the board and a small group of supporters have begun raising money for the non-profit project, setting a fundraising target of $3 million. The group said this initial capital will enable the group to fund both theater construction and a minimum of six months of operations.
The board has also engaged Peter Friday of Forbes Trail Development Company, a local developer, to identify potential properties, and help understand the financial and technical details of building the facility. Potential sites have been identified and initial design of the facility has been drafted.
In addition, Pittsburgh Filmmakers, a 40 year old non-profit arts organization, has been enlisted to advise, and potentially support long-term, the operations of a community theater.
The board insisted that the model being developed, with the help of experienced outside groups such as Pittsburgh Filmmakers, will work well for Sewickley. They also said that because the theater will be part of a non-profit organization, their hope is that it will be a sustainable, long-term operation.
“Not only will this enhance the cultural life of our community, it will also be a key component in the resurgence of our business community," Stripay said.
