The American Cancer Society is celebrating 100 years of saving lives.

On Wednesday, May 22, the American Cancer Society held a ceremony at the Sewickley Valley YMCA to celebrate 100 years of saving lives and creating more birthdays.

Wednesday also began the enrollment period at the YMCA for the American Cancer Society's new, long-term cancer research study called the Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3).

On behalf of the Sewickley Valley YMCA, CEO Trish Hooper accepted an award from the Epidemiology Research Program for their support of the Cancer Prevention Study-3.

The American Cancer Society has contributed to a 20 percent decline in cancer death rates in the United States since the early 1990s.

Today, 2 out of 3 people diagnosed with cancer are surviving for at least five years. As a result, more than 400 people a day are celebrating birthdays that would have otherwise been lost to the disease.
