'Cooking for a Cure' Raises Funds and Awareness for Cancer

The annual benefit helped raise funds for the American Cancer Society.

About three weeks ago, Dr. Michael Sherry was watching a news program about cancer when he was reminded that one of the top researchers in the history of cancer was from right here in Western Pennsylvania.

As this year's honoree, Sherry spoke about the advances of cancer care over the years during the annual "Cooking for a Cure" event sponsored by the Quaker Valley Relay for Life.

Sherry said it was Pittsburgh native Dr. Bernie Fisher who reshaped and improved breast cancer treatment. Fisher was the first to show, among other preventative research, that less-invasive surgery could treat breast cancer just as effectively as radical mastectomies.

"He's the most unknown icon in Pittsburgh," said Sherry, a local oncologist who has devoted his 26-year medical career to fighting cancer. "...I would say Dr. Fisher is one of the top five researchers in the world and he's a Pittbsurgh guy."

The fundraising dinner Saturday evening at the Sewickley Heights Golf Club also featured the cooking of the golf club's own Chef Martin Thomas and former longtime WPXI anchor and reporter Newlin Archinal, who was the host of the event.

As part of the evening's French theme, Thomas used local ingredients and Provence-style preparations to create the evening's tempting menu inspired by the South of France.

Thomas also shared a few helpful hints to recreate highlights from the classic menu, and thanked the crowd for attending.

"It's a great cause, something near and dear to all of us for sure," Thomas said.

The fundraiser benefitted the American Cancer Society's QV Relay for Life, which raises funds and awareness in the battle against cancer.
