Finding a Life and Love in Sewickley

Patch columnist understands why time and again Pittsburgh is named America's most livable city.

Pittsburgh isn’t known for being a particularly “young” city, as many 20-somethings choose to move to more happening spots such as Chicago, Los Angeles or New York City.  Some in their early 20s who grew up in the area .

Having lived in both the city of Pittsburgh and as a child, adolescent, college student and young professional, I have come to realize that neither are as dull as they're often made out to be.

Both places are rather full of vibrant youngsters, making them fun places to live even if you’re in your 20s or 30s.

While Sewickley may not be the most affordable place to live around the city of Pittsburgh, I have noticed many young professionals living here, due to the availability of smaller houses and .  If you can imagine, I’ve even heard it get pretty rowdy in my apartment building on due to late-night partying.  Although it's kept me awake, it's nice to know that people around here are having fun.

Pittsburgh has a great selection of schools, among them the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University, as well as a strong medical community and wildly popular sports teams. Sewickley also is home to young scholars, doctors, nurses and athletic stars (wink wink: Sidney Crosby) — many of whom are single.

Crosby aside, another thing this town has going for it is a strong and youthful church community. The Presbyterian Church of Sewickley is now run by three pastors, all of whom have not reached age 40. This is unusual for any church, let alone one in a small town, but it will certainly help attract other young people to Sewickley.

Although Sewickley is home to some of these bright young bucks, other areas surrounding Pittsburgh -- think Shadyside -- are overflowing with them.  In theory, 20 or 30-somethings shouldn’t have to travel far to meet new friends or find a date.

I, for one, am someone who doubted that I’d ever find an exciting professional life or love in Sewickley. After graduating from Pitt, I planned on getting out of Dodge as fast as possible. Just as I was planning to move to Chicago, I was set up on a date with a fellow Sewickley-ite by the .

Let’s just say, the rest is history because I’m still here.  There are times that I wonder what life would be like in another city, but I do know most things that a young person searches for in life can be found here.
