Get Out: Labor Day Picnic, Parade and Pitt Football

We have some great ideas for your long Labor Day weekend.

1. Celebrate Labor Day at Henle Park

When/Where: noon to 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 3 at . 

Why Go: Bring blankets to the park and enjoy the second annual Community Picnic as part of the last official day of summer. The splash pad will be open for the final time this summer. Hot dogs, hamburgers and snacks will be provided by the , and .

2. Pittsburgh Labor Day Parade

When/Where: 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 3 in Downtown Pittsburgh.

Why Go: Pittsburgh's annual Labor Day parade starts at the old Mellon Arena and travels down Grant Street primarily down the Boulevard Of The Allies finishing at the Steelworkers Building.

Admission: Free. 

 

3. Pittsburgh Panthers Football

When/Where: 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1 at Heinz Field, Pittsburgh.

Why Go: Ironically, this Labor Day weekened, two schools from the Rustbelt are set to play. It's the University of Pittsburgh football team versus Youngstown State University in the Panthers' first home game of the season.

When/Where: 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 31 and Saturday, Sept. 1 at the Bost Building, 623 E. Eighth Avenue, Homestead.

Why Go: This is one of the last standing blast furnaces in the Pittsburgh region and the only one open for tours. Current and Retired steelworkers receive a 20 percent discount with proper ID. Active-duty and retired military members are free and up to five immediate family members will receive a half price discount.

5. Kids Ride the Gateway Clipper for $1

When/Where: 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1 to Monday, Sept. 3 at the Gateway Clipper Fleet, 350 W. Station Square Drive. 

Why Go: Starting Saturday, all children 12 and under can ride any Gateway Clipper Fleet sightseeing cruise during Labor Day weekend for only $1.

Admission: $1 for kids, but offer not redeemable online. Call 412-355-7980 for the offer.
