Get Out: Organic Gardening, 'Evita' or 'Shrek'

It's Thursday and you’ve got no idea what to do this weekend.

There's no need to scramble for ideas. Sewickley Patch has got you covered with  the best bets for maximizing your fun, while giving back a little and educating yourself.

Here are five ideas for things you can do in the Sewickley area and surrounding communities to have a great weekend.

When/Where: 6 p.m. Friday at Penguin Bookstore, Sewickley.

Why Go: She’s a professor at the University of Davidson in North Carolina and is known internationally for her dramatic presentations of self-authored stories and poems. Her books include "You Alone Are Dancing," "Allah in the Islands" and "In Praise of Island Women & Other Crimes."

Pricing: Free.

 

2. SHREK THE MUSCIAL

When/Where: Benedum Center, Downtown, 8 p.m. Friday, 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday, and 1 and 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

Why Go: Straight from Broadway, the musical is based on the movie that entertains children and adults alike.

Pricing: Tickets start at $24.

When/Where: 10 a.m. Saturday. Fern Hollow Nature Center, Sewickley Heights.

Why Go: Join Jessica Walliser, author of the book "Grow Organic," as she outlines pest control. It’s almost that time of year to start gardening!

Pricing: FHNC members $10 per person, non-members $20 per person. Reservation requested as seating is limited.  

 

3. EVITA

Where/When: 8 p.m. Friday. 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Rockwell Theatre at the Pittsburgh Playhouse.

Why Go: It’s "Evita."

Pricing: Tickets are $17 at the playhouse's website. 

 

4.  PUCKS AND STICKS CHARITY HOCKEY GAME

When/Where: 7 p.m. Saturday. Sports Island Center.

Why Go: The Pittsburgh Emergency Medicine Foundation event features a team of EMS All-Stars joined by the Hanson Brothers of the movie "Slap Shot" against the Pittsburgh Celebrity Hockey Team. And all proceeds go to a good cause.

Pricing: Tickets are $10 and are available online.

 

5. KAPLAN S.A.T. PRACTICE TEST

When/Where: 10 a.m. Saturday. Moon Township

Why Go: Kaplan will be offering free mock SATs for all interested students. And practice makes for a near-perfect SAT score!
