Get Out: See Owls, Go Fish or Take a Hike

Maybe it's been a busy week and you haven't had a single moment to think about what you're doing this weekend. Patch has five suggestions.

It’s Friday, and you're still trying to decide what to do for the weekend. You're in luck. Sewickley Patch is here with a few ideas.

 

Pennsylvania's Amazing Owls

When/Where: 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Fern Hollow Nature Center in Sewickley Heights. 

Why Go: Discover the physical adaptations and habits of Pennsylvania’s nocturnal birds of prey. Bob Van NewKirk, a volunteer with the Audubon Society of Western PA, will present the 90-minute interactive program using props and posters. Meet live owls and take a hike to call for owls. Geared for age 6 and up.

Admission: $7 for members; $10 for non-members. You must have reservations to attend. 

 

Ohio Valley Lines Model Railroad Club Holiday Show

When/Where: noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at 1225 Merchant St, Ambridge.

Why Go:  Don't miss the last weekend for the annual Ohio Valley Lines Model Railroad display.

Promised Land

When/Where: 12:15 p.m., 3:30 p.m., 7:25 p.m. and 10:05 p.m. at various times Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Cinemark Robinson Township and XD

Why Go:  See the movie that was filmed just north of Pittsburgh. Directed by Gus Van Sant, Promised Land, a drama focused on the natural gas industry, stars Matt Damon and John Krasinski.

Family Ice Fishing

When/Where: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Raccoon Creek State Park,
3000 State Route 18, Hookstown.

Why Go: Learn the basic skills of ice fishing like rigging and using a tip-up, working a jigging rod, selecting bait and lures and using an auger to bore your fishing hole. Also learn about basic ice safety and how to determine adequate ice thickness for fishing. No fishing license is required and all equipment is provided.

Take a Hike with Venture Outdoors

When/Where: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday in Moraine State Park

Why Go: Take a drive to Butler County and spend a day with Venture Outdoors in the woods of Moraine State Park exploring Pennsylvania's natural beauty. Hike 7 to 9 miles covering moderate to difficult terrain.

Admission: $6 member/ $10 non-member. This hike is dog friendly. Register here.
