Giant Eagle Beer Sales Coming Soon

Colorful signs inside the Giant Eagle supermarket at the Quaker Village Shopping Center say it all: The grocery store is undergoing a substantial face-lift.

Renovations will include a place for beer sales and a pharmacy drive-through, among several other new features.

obtained a building permit at the end of last year, and the grocery chain has been working to expand the overall grocery shopping experience.

“We are currently undergoing an extensive store remodel, with plans to have the project fully complete by the end of the calendar year,” Giant Eagle spokesman Dick Roberts told Patch.

Some of the new features will come sooner rather than later, Roberts said.

“As part of the project, in the coming weeks customers will be able to experience a new health, beauty and wellness department as well as an expanded pharmacy with drive-through access,”  he said.

Giant Eagle is expanding the full length of the strip into the former Rite Aid space. The grocery chain took over the Rite Aid space a few year years ago when that pharmacy moved out of the plaza, said Dave Huffnagle, the borough’s building inspector.

Customers looking to stock up on beer supplies will have the convenience of buying six-packs at the grocery store rather than having to buy a case at a beer distributor.  

Roberts said the grocery chain is excited to introduce beer sales to the Leetsdale store.

“Once available, customers will be able to consume up to two beers in-store when purchased with food, or purchase as many as two six-packs [192 fluid ounces] for off-premise consumption,” he said.

Giant Eagle applied on July 1 and received Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board approval to move a liquor license into the borough.

It is unclear what impact the beer sales will have on established stores that sell beer. The former Quaker Village Beer Distributor closed in January. Council President Roger Nanni previously said the distributor was one of the original stores in the shopping center, which was built in the 1960s.

Grocery stores in Pennsylvania that sell beer must have indoor cafes or restaurants where people can sit and drink a beer.

Roberts said beer sales will be introduced at the grocery store later this year.
