Laughlin Center to Host Book Discussions and a Workshop Regarding Children's Attention Issues

Laughlin Children's Center will help parents, teachers and professionals navigate the world of children's attention disorders through the book, "Smart but Scattered."

The of will host book discussions and a day-long workshop focusing on attention issues in children.

On Oct. 10, the center will bring together parents, teachers and mental health professionals for a workshop based on topics covered in the book, "Smart but Scattered."

Psychologist Peg Dawson and neuropsychologist Dick Guare, the authors of this best-selling book, will lead the workshop and share their knowledge about executive function and attention disorders in children.

Executive function affects children’s behavior and their performance in school. It can impede their ability to stay on task and can greatly alter their ability to function in all realms of life.

A recent study has shown that even watching a fast-paced cartoon like “Sponge Bob Square Pants” can reduce a young child’s ability to pay attention.

The workshop, “,” will cover relevant studies and help frustrated parents, teachers and professionals learn how to help children who are dealing with attention issues.

The workshop runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Pittsburgh International Airport in Findlay. Continuing education credits are available as well.

Preceding the workshop, Laughlin Center clinicians will lead two of "Smart but Scattered" at .

The discussions are part of Youth Connect's 2011-2012 lineup of presentations, and will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday and 10 a.m.  Sept. 26. Parents of children of all ages, whether they have read the book or not, are invited and encouraged to attend these informal book discussions.
