Utility Work Closes Portion of Beaver Road in Glen Osborne

Officials say the infrastructure upgrades will take several months.

A portion of Beaver Road is closed to traffic from Route 65 to Glen Mitchell Road while crews work to improve underground utilities and infrastucture in Glen Osborne.

The road closed Friday to begin work, which involves upgrading water, gas and sewer lines as part of the $4.5 million Glen Osborne Interconnect Project.

“For all intents and purposes, Beaver Road will be closed for the next several months while this construction is going on,” said Sewickley police Capt. Rich Manko.

Manko said roadway that runs past Osborne Elementary remains open to school buses, immediate residents and Port Authority buses, but that sooner or later those vehicles will have to make alternative plans too.

Contractors have to dig up the street to replace multiple lines before the surface is finally repaved. Underneath the road lies 10- to 6-inch gas lines, Bell telephone wires and fiber optics, sewer and water lines.

Bill Petrakis, owner of Petrakis Contracting, said they've installed a new water line so far and are now relocating taps to eliminate the old line. The water-line work is expected to take another couple of weeks.

Eventually, he said the road will have to be completely shut down once sewer work starts. Excavating the road and exposing lines will result in holes too big to cover with metal planks for safe vehicle travel.

Police recommend using Beaver Road to Chestnut Street onto Route 65 as a detour. Manko said this project also requires patience from the public.

"There is no simple answer," he said. "For the greater improvement of all, a few are going to have to be inconvenienced."
