A Section of Route 65 To Be Closed Due to Landslide

The closure will occur from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and from 6 a.m. Saturday to approximately 3 p.m. Monday.

If you’re planning to travel to Sewickley from Pittsburgh this weekend, you may want to leave extra time for detours or consider an alternate route.

Northbound Route 65 in Glenfield will be closed from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, May 20, and from 6 a.m. Saturday, May 21, to 3 p.m. Monday, May 23, for work needed to remove debris from a rockslide, according to PennDOT. Northbound Route 65 may reopen sooner on Monday depending on how the work progresses.

A  occurred  overnight Wednesday in a slide-prone section in Glenfield between Interstate 79 and Red Gate Road.

PennDOT spokesman Jim Struzzi said rocks tumbled from the hillside onto the pavement in the northbound lanes because dirt on the hillside  was sodden and loose from the heavy rains. The rocks fell near the  that was closed after another slide on April 5, Struzzi said.

Crews were unable to obtain a crane to begin the work today. The road today has remained open for .

The closure will occur from 6 a.m. on Saturday to approximately 3 p.m. on Monday.

About 14,196 vehicles use northbound Route 65 in this area on an average day.

Traffic will be detoured from I-79 to Route 51 to the Sewickley Bridge. Please use caution and expect delays. Southbound Route 65 will remain open.   

Contractor crews from Michael Facchiano Contracting Inc. of Pittsburgh will use a crane to remove debris from the hillside.
