Update: Severe Thunderstorms Move into Sewickley Area

About 18,000 Duquesne Light customers are without power due to the storms.

The National Weather Service has extended a severe thunderstorm for Western Pennsylvania from 2 until 3 p.m.

Meanwhile, about 18,000 customers are experiencing storm-related power outages this afternoon, according to Duquense Light Co.

Joey Vallarian, Duquesne Light spokesman, said crews are out in the field assessing damage to the system and making repairs. A restoration time is undetermined at this point, he said.

Severe thunderstorms started moving through the Sewickley area about 12:50 p.m., about the time Doppler Radar indicated a severe thunderstorm capable of producing damaging winds in excess of 60 mph. The storm was located near Wellsville, OH, according to the National Weather Service.

In addition to large hail and damaging wind, the weather service warns continuous cloud to ground lightning is also happening with this storm. Residents are reminded to move indoors during lightning.

"Lightning is a killer," the weather service said. "If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning."

Report hail, strong winds or wind damage to the National Weather Service by calling 1-877-633-6772.
