If Your Water Looks Funny, Here's Why

The Sewickley Water Authority will begin its hydrant flushing program on Sunday.

The Sewickley Water Authority will begin the spring portion of its semi-annual hydrant flushing program on Sunday evening.

Flushing in the Sewickley, Sewickley Heights and Glen Osborne service areas start Sunday, April 7 and end Friday, April 12.

During flushing, customers may notice low pressure and water discoloration. Customers should test the water before doing laundry or drawing large quantities for use.

Manager Brian Hohman said state and local regulatory agencies both require this program twice per year.

"Water pipe flushing is the process of cleaning the interior of the water distribution pipes by sending a rapid flow of water through the pipes," he said. "Flushing maintains water quality in many ways."

The SWA program flushing is completed each year, once in the spring, or early April, and once in the fall, or early October. This ensures that sediment build up in the water pipes is removed, Hohman said.

Emergency or unforseen delays could result in a change from the proposed schedule.
