Sewickley Residents Take Blast of Snow Flurries in Stride

Additional nighttime snow accumulation is possible, according to the National Weather Service.

Bundled up from the cold, Giuseppe Villella of Chestnut Street shoveled off his sidewalk Tuesday afternoon.

The same time, about two blocks away, Kris Hughes brushed snow off her car.

But neither of the two neighbors would utter a complaint about Tuesday’s blast of snow flurries that started on Monday and continued overnight. According to the National Weather Service, less than a half inch of additional nighttime snow accumulation is possible and forecasters are calling for a chance of snow showers Wednesday, mainly between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

“Oh, I love it,” Hughes of Logan Street said with a smile. Villella said he is 83 and quite used to snowy weather.

“I’m a little bit old agey,” he said.

Like many locals, Hughes said she’d actually hoped to see snow about two weeks ago.

“It was nice not to have snow earlier in December, but it would’ve been nice to have it for Christmas,” she said.

students returned to class Tuesday morning and Hughes said her 7-year-old hoped for a snow day, but didn’t get one.

Still, some students like 11-year-old Brittany Johnston of took advantage of the snow after class.

Johnston went sledding on the hill behind the and had a little help getting a push downhill from her sister Kara Hine, 16, who is on crutches.  Because of a knee injury, Hine was unable to sled but their mother expects there will be more opportunities for sledding.

“We do this all winter long,” said Pam Johnston who waited in her car. “On weekends, it’s sun up to sun down,” she said.
