4th Annual Sewickley Unleashed Returns Saturday

Sewickley Unleashed gives families and their pets a day to let loose and have fun.

Sewickley Unleashed returns on Saturday, May 18, with the annual Pet Parade—and much more.

Now in its fourth year, Sewickley Unleashed is a day for families and their pets to let loose and have fun. All proceeds raised benefit the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society.

Alex DeLoia, social media strategist for Village Green Partners, said this year's fundraiser returns to Broad Street with a live broadcast from 100.7 STAR Pittsburgh, and food and vendor booths opening at 10 a.m.

"It'll be a fun one this year," DeLoia said.

For many, the highlight of the annual event is the Pet Parade, which begins at noon and marches pet owners and their furry pals through the streets of Sewickley dressed in their most creative costumes.

Pet Parade

Leading the parade pack this year will be Sewickley Mayor Brian Jeffe and his dog Otis, Sewickley Patrolman Frank Lesniak and Tripp, Sewickley’s K-9 officer as well as the hounds from the Sewickley Hunt Club.

Participants can enter the parade as an individual or as a group, but either way, they're encouraged to dress up. Prizes will be awarded in various categories, including "Best in Parade," "Best Costume" and "Best Doggie Family."

Parade judges this year are Sally Wiggin, WTAE-TV anchor, Rick LeBeau, American Kennel Club judge and author of “Count Noble: The Greatest Dog That Ever Lived,” and Pat Lamantia, Nestle Purina PetCare Professional Engagement Team.

The cost is $10 per pet entered if you pre-register. Pre-Registration will close at noon today, May 17. Registration on Saturday will be $15. All participants receive a Wag Bag, which includes coupons, doggie treats, and other goodies.

Sewickley Unleashed 5K Walk/Run

Also new this year is the 5K Walk/Run, a people-only event sponsored by Sewickley Sporting Goods and the YMCA of Pittsburgh.

DeLoia said about 65 people had registered for the run as of Wednesday. The race starts at 8:30 a.m. and finishes in front of the Sewickley Municipal Building.

Medals will be given to the top finishing male and female runner in each age group during an onstage award presentation.

Sewickley Showcase

Starting at 2 p.m., the Sewickley Showcase will feature local businesses and adoptable pets from the Humane Society.

"It's sort of like a fashion show," DeLoia said.

In the most fun way possible, you’ll learn all about the different businesses in the Sewickley community and about the adoptable animal they’re sponsoring as they grace the stage.

Those who cannot participate in the day, but want to get involved also have a way to get involved this year by raising funds on their own. Prizes for the top fund raisers include a trip to Punta Cana, Kennywood tickets, gift cards and other prizes.
