What's So Great About Your Mom?

In honor of Mother's Day, we asked Sewickley-area residents and out-of-towners to tell us about their moms.

Mother's Day came to be nearly 100 years ago, thanks to Miss Anna M. Jarvis.

Although Jarvis had no children, she was close to her mother. After her mother died, Jarvis realized that children should appreciate their mothers more when they are alive. She spearheaded a letter-writing campaign that eventually led to Mother’s Day becoming a national holiday on May 8, 1914.

Mother’s Day continues to be celebrated on the second Sunday of May every year.
