Bethel Park Athlete Heads to London
A 19-year-old college student placed first in the 20,000-meter race walk Sunday in the U.S. Olympic trials.
A 19-year-old from Bethel Park has qualified to compete in the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Trevor Barron, a computer science major at Colorado College who just completed his freshman year, won the U.S. Olympic trials' 20,000-meter race walk (50 laps around the Hayward Field track) in 1:23:00.10, setting three records in the process, according to armorytrack.com.
His 1:02:06.57 was an American record at 15,000 on the track, and the final 1:23.00.10 was both "an all-time Olympic trials best and an American best-ever, anywhere, on the track," the site reports.

Many are saying his T-shirt said it all. It read: "Pray For Colorado," representing those who have had to evacuate their homes leaving precious keepsakes behind because of relentless wildfires.
Barron was the only athlete in the event to earn a spot on the U.S. team.
