Dr. George E. Riegel III

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday November 5, 2011 at St. Paul's Lutheran church in Sewickley. Friends will be received after the service.

Dr. George E. Riegel III passed peacefully Thursday October 19, 2011 at age 92. Born in Williamsport, PA.

His medical training began at the Army Air Force (AAF) School of Aviation Medicine, Randolph Field, TX, where he was stationed when Pearl Harbor occurred. He then returned to HQ AAF Proving Ground Command, Eglin AFB, FL, Medical Administration, in charge of the Flight Surgeon Dept. until the end of WWII.

BA degree from Susquehanna Univ., then MD from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. Postgraduate studies at Robert Packer Hospital and Guthrie Clinic, Sayre, PA. Member of Organized Army Reserve during Korean War, serving active duty on Neurology Staff at Walter Reed Hospital, Washington, DC. He then commanded a Special Forces unit until the end of the war.

Following the Korean War, he conducted a Family Practice in Sewickley, PA until the end of 1974 when he joined Dravo Corp., retiring in 1984 as Medical Director. He held Fellowships in Family and Occupational Medicine and was on the Staff of Sewickley Valley Hospital.

During practice he was a member of all major medical societies; served as school physician for , and local parochial schools; member of Sewickley and Edgeworth Boards of Health; belonged to Kiwanis and Sewickley Board of Trade. He was also Occupational Physician for and School of Nursing. He is listed in “Who’s Who in Finance and Industry” (1979-80) and was featured in a front page article of the Wall Street Journal in 1975. He and his practice were also featured in the Journal of Occupational Medicine.

He was a member of Doric Lodge F&AM and Gorgas Lodge Consistory, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and the .

He was also a Major in the Civil Air Patrol at Greater Pittsburgh Airport starting in 1986, serving as Medical Officer, Assistant Personnel Officer and Recruiting Officer.

Married Elizabeth K. Riegel during medical school at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelhpia. George is predeceased by Elizabeth, and is survived by daughters Elizabeth A. Riegel (B. Parker Livingston); Susan (David) Price grandson Nathan; and son Stephen (Kathy) Riegel.

Nobody was kinder than our Dad. He cared deeply and personally about everyone in our community, no matter what their situation. He always wanted to help people, and he did every day.
