Petition Urges Dick's Sporting Goods to End Ammunition Sales

Gun control advocates are asking the Moon-based sporting goods retailer to stop stocking high-powered magazines.

A Mississippi teacher is circulating a petition online requesting that Dick's Sporting Goods discontinue the sale of high-powered ammunition in light of a Colorado movie theater massacre that killed 12 and wounded 58.

The petition, which has gained more than 4,000 signatures, asks the national sporting goods retailer, which is headquartered in Moon Township, to stop selling high-capacity magazines in its stores and online.

24-year-old James Holmes is charged with 24 counts of murder and 116 counts of attempted murder after Colorado police said he opened fire last month in a theater during a showing of the Batman film Dark Knight Rises, killing more than a dozen moviegoers.

Authorities said he used a high-powered, semi-automatic assault rifle in the shooting that was capable of unloading as many as 50 to 60 rounds per minute. He also brought two Glock pistols and a shotgun with him to the theater, according to the Associated Press.

Read the petition here.

The petition was started by Mississippi health teacher Getty Israel, who says pulling high-capacity ammunition from store shelves could deter a similar massacre, according to a statement from MoveOn.org, which has endorsed the effort.

Dick's Sporting Goods could not be reached for comment and has not yet responded to the petition. The company operates more than 500 locations across the country, including one at the Mall at Robinson and and is based out of a Court Street facility.

What do you think? Should Dick's Sporting Goods pull ammunition for high-powered guns from its shelves? Is making ammunition less accessible effective gun control? Do you purchase ammunition from Dick's? Log in and share your thoughts in the comments below.

Dick's should continue selling ammunition. Moveon.org is a socialistic organization advocating taking away our constitutional rights. It is evil thinking people packing the guns that kill innocent ones.

"The murderous bastard at Aurora like at the other incidents is the only one to blame. The tools used are only that, inanimate tools that alone do not cause any harm. As the late Col. Jeff Cooper stated, “the rifle has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own”. The scalpel in the hands of a trained surgeon does not make him Jack the Ripper. Plain and simple, only the murderer is to blame not the tools. There is no need for talking heads and politicians to rant and to opine on matters they do not understand, such as the need for control of the tools that were utilized to commit these horrible acts. Rather, they should opine on how the law can better be applied to more efficient prosecution of the offender in these cases." I do not recall having ever bought anything from Dick's.They certainly do not want to withdraw the ammo mentioned for sale because it brings in cash and, in these difficult times, it is very important to retailers. Besides lots of other places will sell this stuff, anyway. However, instead of wasting time and resources on this aspect of weapons, I would suggest you advocate the removal of lead from bullets. Lead has pervaded our environment and caused uncounted deaths of animals who have ingested it. Yet, for some reason I cannot fathom, the all powerful NRA opposes this action too. Maybe as part of their on going paranoia that the government will confiscate all of their guns - hunting, protection, defense, display, target and killing people one does not like or just for the fun of watching them die.

C'mon Cheryl - Mitt is gone and so do stop the "socialistic" jargon or at least find out what the term means and it is most certainly not the "communist" implication slapped on it. Wait until you need or want to collect your SS and Medicare/Medicaid that the GOP wanted to demolish - and still does. Unless, of course you have a small stash in Switzerland or the Caymans for your golden years.
