Back to School: Leetsdale Police Monitor Traffic Outside QV High School

Wednesday was back to school for Quaker Valley students in grades 10 to 12, and back to traffic monitoring for Leetsdale police.

A Leetsdale police officer issued a swift to one motorist who stopped on Beaver Street Wednesday morning to drop a student off at the high school.

said the number of cars that did obey the law was “proof positive” that drivers got the about drop-off expectations outside the high school. On Tuesday when ninth graders only returned to school, the same monitoring effort ended without a single warning issued.

Motorists will receive a warning this week, but will be ticketed beginning next week.

Sewickley Patch monitored Beaver Street traffic outside the high school beginning at 7:15 a.m. and found that the majority of cars followed the rules, pulling over into parking spaces to let students out or using the bottom of as an alternative drop off spot. Fourteen cars were seen using Valley Lane, with most students using the cross walk to get to the school.

A few infractions were also observed: two cars stopped in the street; one entered the bus driveway during the bus-only timeframe; and one vehicle made a three-point turn in the road on the end.  

, used orange cones to block off the curb in front of the school and at 7:15 a.m., Wright said he closed the bottom of the hill behind the school to prevent vehicles from passing through.

Wright also monitored traffic coming off . He said there were no issues with cars turning off 65, dropping off, and returning to the boulevard.

“So far it’s working well,” Wright said.

Santucci said the police will continue monitoring traffic throughout the entire school year. Next week, he said officers will be using Vascar and InRedd, speed monitoring equipment, to crack down on drivers doing more than 15 mph in the school zone.
