Citizens Police Academy Begins This Fall

Allegheny County residents interested in the 11-week program must apply no later than Sept. 30.

State police in Moon and the Pittsburgh Technical Institute this fall will present an 11-week Citizens Police Academy for residents of Allegheny and Washington counties to learn more about police, the training they receive and the concepts and responsibilities their jobs involve.

The academy is intended to foster "understanding and communications" between citizens and police, troopers said in a statement.

Class sessions will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays from Oct. 20 to Dec. 11 at PTI's North Fayette campus at 1111 McKee Road, Oakdale, according to Tpr. Robin Mungo, a state police spokeswoman.

Participants must be age 18 or older, must live in Allegheny or Washington counties and must not have a criminal record.  A background check will be conducted, Tpr. Mungo said.

Class size will be limited, and participants will be selected on a first-come, first-chosen basis.

For applications or more information, go to http://www.pti.edu/events/citizens-police-academy.html.  Those interested also may contact Tpr. Mungo at 412-294-1116 in Moon or Tpr. Joseph Christy at 724-223-5200 in Washington.

Applications must be mailed to Tpr. Mungo, c/o Pennsylvania State Police, 449 McCormick Road, Moon, PA 15108. They must be postmarked no later than Sept. 30.
